Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Autumn-Winter 2014 concluded recently and was marked by a riot of colours. Celebrating Indian Heritage and Colours, on day one Tarun Tahiliani's put together an ensemble of gorgeous silhouettes in zari, chanderi, raw silk and chikankari with a interesting contemporary twist.
Coupled with an electrifying performance by musicians from Rajasthan, the Collection was a mix of bright colours with gold jewellery. Showstopper Shilpa Shetty dazzled the ramp in a layered Kanjeevaram lehenga and draped corset. Later the designer shared that his dresses are for working women who need to get ready quickly. I have toned down the complex dresses to make it user-friendly. They can be worn within minutes and look very refreshing.
A little irking fact was that most of the designers decided to stick to their comfort zone and recreated what we have been seeing for quite some time now. There were the usual whites, blacks and nudes with little innovation.
Anupama Dayal's collection came up with a bridal collection inspired by Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra. Bright colours dominated her creations at the show. Next in line was Vineet Bahl, who kept it simple and elegant. Using handloom fabrics for his collection of ethnic wear he came up with outfits like Nehru-collar shirt blouses, full -sleeved dresses, ivory suits and the ankle-length leggings teamed with kurtas.
Kiran Uttam Ghosh's collection saw some interesting capes and tones of nudes, pinks, gold, beige and reds dominating the ramp. The collection featured heavy on layered colours, textures, embroideries and patterns. The outfits included calf length skirts, wide net trousers with bright embroidered hemline.
Raakesh Agarvwal's creation was a little different featuring body suits, contour-fitted gowns and bold Dusty rose, off-white, red and chocolate colours dominated Designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil’s collection The shadows within. The outfits included fitted tops, flared bottoms, jackets, cigarette pants and boleros. The collection The Shawas surely a beautiful soiree with an impressive orchestrated introduction. From their Victorian gowns and knee-length dresses to kurtas and palazzos along with dhoti style kurtas for men.
Rina Dhaka used black and white colours for her collection, which was a mix of skirts, crop tops, striped prints and sheer blouses.
Second day wrapped up on a patriotic note with Anju Modi's collection inspired by men in uniform. The collection was a blend of typical ethnic print saris and kurtas in shades of military green, maroons and khaki teamed with jackets and Nehru caps. Designer Tanvi Kedia's collection saw a very feminine collection with mish-mash of digital prints. The Designer Paromita Banerjee's collection took inspiration from Japan's Boro technique of mending and recycling textiles. The penultimate day of the show had a designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi Ahuja with their play with spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds and their collection — House of Cards.
Mandira Wirk had her collection, Ombre, on the same day.
Sunday marked the end of the extravaganza, where designer Jenjum Gadi’s showcased "Turkish Delight inspired by his visit to Istanbul, with a North East Indian twist and the grand finale had ace designer Namrata Joshipura, with her collection, elecTRON — pegged with interesting play of colour and embellishments.
