Navratras are here and the most fun part of the nine days other than the fasting, feasting, festivities is the Dandiya Raas, which has become a huge event these days especially amongst the new generation. It has become an event for dressing up, socializing and of course dancing. Before we get into the dressing up part of it, let’s see look back and learn how did this start.
Dandiya Raas has always been performed in Ma Durga’s honor. This dance form is actually performed as a mock-fight between the Goddess and Mahishasur, the mighty demon-king, and is nicknamed “The Sword Dance”. The sticks (dandiyas) of the dance represent the swords of Durga. The dance is a gaiety celebration of the victory of Ma Durga over the demon. With all this knowledge by your side, are you all set now to celebrate it with more pomp and splendor?
These days it’s not about the same old mirror work chaniya cholis that we used to see in the 90’s. People are more into trends and style these days. The main mantra to keep in mind is “Go Loud or Go Home”, low back blouses for your saris, low waist lehngas, clashing loud colours, statement jewellery and everything gaudy. Let the extravagant you drown into the mood of festivities.
For all those who are most confortable in salwar/ choodidar suits, it’s best to go with an easy to maintain and trendy silhouette as you don’t want to spend your time adjusting your dress, Just wear it , forget it and dance away the night. Go with some metalic jewellery, but try and stay away from the boring oxidized silver jewellery.
All the Lehnga Ladies can make a statement with potli bags and stacks of bangles, and a contrasting necklace to go with your lehga. Make sure you deck up your dandiya sticks a little as well.
The Comfy in Sari group can go with bright and loud colours. Though most of your friends would go with the same old baandhani work saris, make sure you stand out, wear something quirky yet traditional. Go with a chunky necklace and a chic clutch.
So ladies deck up and get ready for some rocking time at the event and to break your dandiyas! Let the guys go gaga over your looks and girls fall head over heels.
