Dandiya Raas has always been performed in Ma Durga's honor. This dance form is actually performed as a mock-fight between the Goddess and Mahishasur, the mighty demon-king, and is nicknamed "The Sword Dance". The sticks (dandiyas) of the dance represent the swords of Durga. The dance is a gaiety celebration of the victory of Ma Durga over the demon.
